Getting Ready

Before Your Appointment

A little preparation goes a long way toward a great experience

Choosing Your Design

Start with meaning—or don't

Some people get tattoos to commemorate events, honor loved ones, or express their identity. Others just want something beautiful. Both are completely valid.

Consider starting medium-small

For your first tattoo, we often recommend something medium-small in a spot that's easy to hide if you want to. This lets you experience the process and see how your body heals.

Bring references

Even if you can't draw, collect images that capture the vibe, style, or elements you like. Pinterest boards, Instagram saves, screenshots—all helpful!

We'll create something just for you

During your consultation, your artist will discuss your vision and create a custom design. We don't use cookie-cutter designs—every piece is unique to you.

The Days Before

Stay hydrated Drink plenty of water the day before and day of
Get good sleep A well-rested body handles tattooing better
Eat a solid meal 1-2 hours before your appointment
Skip alcohol No drinking for 24 hours before (it thins your blood)
Moisturize Keep the area moisturized in the days leading up (but not day-of)
The Big Day

Day of Your Appointment

Here's everything you need to know for a smooth experience

What to Eat

Eat a proper meal 1-2 hours before. Think protein and complex carbs—your body needs fuel.

Good Options

  • Eggs and toast
  • A hearty sandwich
  • Pasta with protein
  • Rice and chicken

Skip

  • Excessive caffeine
  • Energy drinks
  • Alcohol (never!)

What to Wear

Comfortable, loose-fitting clothing that provides easy access to the tattoo area.

  • Arm tattoo: Tank top or short sleeves

Dark colors are good—ink can sometimes transfer to clothing.

The Experience

During Your Tattoo

What to expect when you're in the chair

1

Consultation

Your artist will discuss the design, placement, and size. This is your chance to ask questions and make changes.

2

Stencil Placement

We'll apply the design to your skin so you can see exactly how it will look. Take your time approving this—if something doesn't feel right, speak up!

3

The Tattooing

Your artist will begin. The first few lines often feel the most intense as your body adjusts. Most people settle into the sensation after a few minutes.

Does It Hurt?

Honestly? A little. But it's totally manageable—and usually much less painful than people expect.

"

Most people describe it as a warm scratching sensation, like a cat scratch. Annoying but definitely not unbearable.

Less Sensitive

  • Outer arm
  • Upper back
  • Thigh
  • Calf

More Sensitive

  • Inner arm
  • Ribs
  • Feet
  • Hands
  • Spine

Tips for Managing Discomfort

  • Breathe steadily (don't hold your breath!)
  • Listen to music or a podcast
  • Chat with your artist if it helps
  • Take breaks when you need them
  • Know that it's totally okay to feel nervous

Taking Breaks

Need a break? Just ask! It's completely normal and expected. Stop whenever you need to use the restroom, grab a snack, stretch, or just take some deep breaths. We're never in a rush. Your comfort is our priority.

Healing

After Your Tattoo

Proper aftercare ensures your tattoo heals beautifully

Aftercare is Crucial

How you care for your tattoo in the first 2-3 weeks determines how well it heals. We'll go over everything in person and provide written instructions.

1 Leave bandage on for 2-4 hours
2 Wash gently with unscented soap
3 Apply thin layer of moisturizer 2-3x daily
4 Don't pick, scratch, or soak it
5 Keep it out of direct sun

Free Touch-Ups

Most tattoos need minor touch-ups once healed—this is normal! We offer free touch-ups within one year of your appointment if you followed our aftercare instructions.

Questions

Common First-Timer Questions

We've heard them all—no question is too small

Q

What if I don't like the design?

You'll see the stencil on your skin before any ink is applied. If something isn't right, we make changes until you love it. We never start until you're 100% happy.

Q

What if I need to stop halfway through?

This rarely happens, but we can absolutely stop and schedule a second session to finish. Just communicate with us.

Q

What if I feel faint?

Tell your artist immediately. We'll stop, get you water and a snack, and let you recover. This is more common than you'd think, and we're prepared for it. No embarrassment necessary!

Q

Can I see the design beforehand?

We'll discuss your ideas thoroughly during consultation. Most designs are finalized and shown on appointment day to ensure they're customized to your body and placement.

Q

Should I tip my artist?

Tips are appreciated but never expected. 15-20% is customary if you're happy with your experience.

Q

I'm really nervous. Is that okay?

Absolutely. We get it, and we're here to support you. Many clients tell us they were surprised by how relaxed and easy the experience was. We've got you.
